Words, stories, games and song are bringing people together during NSW Aboriginal Languages Week. Running from 18–25 October, the celebration follows the theme Living Languages, Strong Futures and recognises the ongoing work of language practitioners and communities.

The 18 October program announcement says 35 organisations and groups have received support through $200,000 in grants. Their activities span different language communities and places, with the Aboriginal Languages Trust hosting the statewide week.
In South Nowra, the Marring Foundation’s program brings learners, families, young people, Elders and knowledge holders together. Walhallow Local Aboriginal Land Council’s Caroona event centres Gamilaroi language and storytelling. Nyambinga Kyuna Aboriginal Corporation’s Armidale gathering focuses on Anaiwan words, phrases and song, including opportunities for young people to hear and use language on Country.
The Trust is also offering free online webinars and resources for schools, workplaces and communities. The range of activities makes an important point through practice: language learning happens in many settings, from a shared game to a gathering with Elders or an online discussion. The full program provides the best starting point for finding a local activity and following the guidance of the people leading it.
