Photography can frame a place, but it can also question who gets to tell its story. On Country: Photography from Australia is scheduled to open at Melbourne’s Immigration Museum on Friday 16 October, bringing that question into the gallery.

The Australian premiere follows the exhibition’s presentation at the Rencontres d’Arles photography festival in France. The 22 September Museums Victoria preview describes work by 17 Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists and collectives exploring relationships between Country, community, identity and colonialism.

Featured practitioners include Maree Clarke, Michael Cook, Brenda L Croft, Robert Fielding, Ricky Maynard and James Tylor. The curatorial team includes Yorta Yorta curator Dr Kimberley Moulton alongside Brendan McCleary, Pippa Milne and Elias Redstone. PHOTO Australia developed and produced the exhibition with Rencontres d’Arles as co-producer.

The museum’s framing of Country extends beyond scenery to encompass stories, family, language and relationships. That gives visitors a useful question to carry between photographs: what is made visible here, and what knowledge or connection gives the image its meaning? The exhibition opens at the Immigration Museum on Flinders Street, offering Melbourne audiences time to consider a range of contemporary perspectives within one shared space.
