A new partnership in Guyra has older students helping much younger children learn about culture and language. Guyra Preschool and Long Day Care Centre has begun working with Year 8 and 9 Aboriginal Studies students from Guyra Central School.

Armidale Regional Council’s 10 September report describes the first shared session, where the school students mentored preschool children through cultural learning activities. The younger children also learned words for hello, goodbye and thank you.
The partnership is intended to continue fortnightly. Planned experiences include bush tucker, dance, language and story time, supported by the school’s teachers and preschool staff.
There are two kinds of learning in a session like this. Preschoolers meet new words and activities, while the older students practise explaining, supporting and taking responsibility for a group. The relationship between the two age groups is part of the value of the arrangement.
The report concerns the beginning of the partnership, so its longer-term effects are still to be seen. For now, it offers a small, local example of cultural learning built into an ongoing routine: children meeting again, getting to know one another and returning to ideas over time.
