Indigenous Literacy Day has a life beyond the day on the calendar. This year’s film and celebration remain a way for families and classrooms to spend time with First Nations stories, cultures and languages after the 2 September event.

Produced and presented by the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, the 2026 program follows the theme Country Is Our Teacher. Niningka and Chris introduce viewers to their communities in Mparntwe/Alice Springs and Nyirripi in the Northern Territory, sharing connections with place, language and everyday life.
The Sydney Opera House program page lists the film as available on demand from 2 September. It also describes the livestream celebration, which includes song, storytelling and the launch of My Walk Through the Seasons on Ngaanyatjarra Country by community authors from Warakurna, Western Australia.
For schools, the accompanying teacher resources offer a way to keep learning connected to the program. Giving time to the children and authors featured helps keep attention on particular places and voices, rather than treating literacy as a single national story.
A quiet afternoon of watching, listening and returning to a favourite passage can be a worthwhile continuation of the celebration. The program is designed for children and adults to learn together.
NITV’s report from 2 September records the celebration and its film, book launch and live performances.
