Time to write is valuable. So are people who can help a writer navigate publishing, leadership and the next stage of a creative career.

The Copyright Agency–UTS Indigenous Writers’ Fellowship combines those forms of support. Announced on 21 July, it is seeking two emerging or early career First Nations Australian writers for a program running from August 2026 to July 2027. Applications close at midnight today, 2 August.
Each successful fellow will receive a $15,000 stipend. The program includes two one-week residencies in Sydney, monthly mentoring, a leadership development workshop and opportunities to connect with publishers, editors and literary journals. Online participation between activities enables writers based elsewhere in Australia to take part.
The eligibility requirements are specific: applicants need at least five professional creative publications and must be working towards a first or second book. They must also be able to attend the residencies and the UTS Indigenous Studies Conference.
Those details distinguish this opportunity from an introductory writing course. It is aimed at practitioners already building a body of work and looking for sustained support to develop it further.
