An award for a lifetime of work usually brings a person to mind. This one recognises a company, and the generations of people whose work made it possible.

Bangarra Dance Theatre announced on 20 February 2026 that it had been selected for the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in Dance at Biennale Danza. The company described itself as the first Australian recipient and the first company to receive the honour, historically given to individual dancers and choreographers.
The February announcement set the Venice festival dates at 17 July to 1 August and included plans for the European premiere of Frances Rings’ Terrain. The ceremony is still ahead of this edition: selection for an award should not be confused with having already accepted it in Venice.
For an audience familiar with only one Bangarra production, the honour offers a reason to look backwards as well as forwards. A company’s body of work includes dancers, choreographers, music, design, cultural relationships and the people who sustain its operation.
The story also makes room for a different kind of cultural milestone. International recognition can be read through an ongoing practice at home, rather than as the moment that gives that practice value. Follow the company’s own account as it approaches the festival, and explore the work that led to the invitation.
