The conference doors have closed, but the account of what happened inside is now available. AIATSIS has published its reflection on the 2026 Summit on the Gold Coast.

The report, dated 1 July, says the annual gathering sold out for the first time. The five-day Summit opened on 1 June on the lands of the Kombumerri of the Yugambeh language region, bringing together participants in person and online.

Language, education, cultural revitalisation and caring for Country were among the themes described. The report also pays attention to who governs knowledge and how institutions work with the communities whose stories, languages and information they hold.

For someone who could not attend, the value is not simply the size of the audience. A public reflection lets readers see which subjects organisers considered important after the sessions ended. It can provide a route towards speakers, projects and organisations worth following in their own right.

This edition does not speak on behalf of the participants or claim that a conference resolved the questions it raised. A gathering is a place for exchange, and the work continues elsewhere. Begin with the official account, notice the different fields represented, and choose one thread to investigate further. That can make a national event useful well beyond the people who were in the room.
