The Australian Government’s announcement of 4 June set out plans for the Barunga Festival from 5 to 7 June in the Northern Territory community near Katherine. This edition looks back at that announcement; the attendance figures it supplied were expectations before the festival, rather than a final count.

Bagala Aboriginal Corporation, representing the Jawoyn communities of Barunga and Beswick, was managing the event. The announced performers included Troy Cassar-Daley, Jem Cassar-Daley, Frank Yamma and Emily Wurramara. More than forty sporting teams were expected to compete across Australian football, basketball and softball.

Putting those activities together matters. Someone arriving to follow a team can encounter music; someone drawn by a performer can discover a different part of the program. Neither interest needs to stand in for the whole community.

The local management is also worth noticing. When reading about a major cultural festival, look beyond the headline act to the organisation responsible for hosting it. The people setting the program and welcoming visitors are an essential part of the story.
