More than 50 local community members are now working as Good Food People across remote communities in Western Australia, the Northern Territory, far north Queensland and South Australia. Their work is being highlighted as National Nutrition Week begins.

The National Indigenous Australians Agency’s 12 October update describes the First Nations Nutrition Workforce Program, led by the Arnhem Land Progress Aboriginal Corporation in partnership with Community Enterprise Queensland and Outback Stores.
Since starting in August 2025, the program has worked across 38 remote stores. Good Food People share nutrition knowledge, support store policies and help develop takeaway options, with specialist training and ongoing support from qualified nutritionists.
The agency also reports progress on the National Code of Practice for Remote Store Operations and support available through Monash University’s Healthy Stores Project. Together, the initiatives focus attention on the places where people buy food and the local workers helping shape those environments.
This is a story about community capability and retail conditions. Employment, training and relationships with customers all sit within the work. Recognising the people involved gives a more practical picture of food security than a national discussion alone: the effort is happening in familiar stores, through daily contact with the communities they serve.
