A new edition of Yijarni: True Stories from Gurindji Country gives readers a way to spend longer with the histories surrounding the Wave Hill Walk-Off. The bilingual book brings Gurindji and English together in a community-driven account of life and events on Gurindji Country.

Aboriginal Studies Press released the second edition on 31 August to commemorate 60 years since the walk-off. The AIATSIS announcement records its launch at the Gurindji Freedom Day Festival in Kalkaringi on 22 August and a new foreword by Gurindji scholar and artist Brenda L Croft.

First published in 2016, Yijarni places the 1966 action within a much wider history. Its stories include early station life, the arrival of the first aeroplane on Gurindji Country and difficult accounts of colonial violence. Readers should be prepared for that historical material.

The return to print is an opportunity to listen across languages and generations. A familiar national milestone can look different when approached through stories attached to particular people and places. This edition’s 256 pages offer room for that fuller context, extending the anniversary beyond a single date and into the knowledge shared by Gurindji Elders and contributors.
