Fishing communities are connected to a much wider world of markets, research and technology. A September report from the Torres Strait Regional Authority explains how a delegation used a national seafood conference to build those connections for Zenadth Kes/Torres Strait.

TSRA board members and staff attended Seafood Directions in Sydney from 28–30 July. Fisheries Advisory Committee chair Dimas Toby and Assistant Portfolio Member for Fisheries Simon Naawi took part in presentations, workshops and networking activities.

The 15 September account highlights new technologies, sustainability initiatives and partnerships discussed across the industry. It presents the trip as a way to bring ideas and knowledge back into future conversations about Torres Strait fisheries.

The timing matters: the conference occurred in July, while this update follows the authority’s September report. It does not announce a new contract or claim that a particular technology has already been adopted locally.

What it does show is the work of staying connected. Industry gatherings can help regional representatives compare experiences, ask questions and meet people they may later work with. The useful next chapter will be how those relationships and learnings contribute to opportunities identified by local fishers and their communities.
