Some buildings hold the memory of decisions that changed lives far beyond their walls. Amoonguna’s community hall is one of them, and residents are preparing to gather there on Friday 18 September to honour its place in land rights history.

The Central Land Council announced the celebration on 16 September. The program is scheduled to begin at 11.30am, with performances by local men, women and children, a short video of a 1977 CLC meeting, and the unveiling of an interpretive sign. A community barbecue and birthday cake are also planned.

The hall hosted some of the earliest Central Land Council meetings between 1975 and 1977. It was also where Arrernte leader Wenten Rubuntja was elected chair, according to the announcement.

This year marks half a century since the Aboriginal Land Rights Act in the Northern Territory. Bringing that anniversary into a familiar community space makes room for younger residents to learn about the people and choices behind the wider history.

The hall itself becomes an entry point: a place people know in the present, carrying stories from earlier generations. The planned sign and screening offer two different ways to keep those connections visible after the celebration ends.
