Long service to community often happens across many rooms, meetings and everyday conversations. South Australia’s Women of Impact Awards have recognised that kind of sustained contribution in Kaurna and Narungga woman Susan Dixon.

Dixon received the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Impact Award at a ceremony at Government House on 8 September. The Department of Human Services report, published the following day, describes more than 40 years of advocacy across education, housing, health, environmental protection and other areas of public life.
Her recognition includes consultancy work, often undertaken voluntarily, to ensure Aboriginal voices, lived experience and cultural authority inform community and public decisions. That breadth is a reminder that leadership does not always fit within one profession or organisation.
Four women were honoured across the awards’ categories, following an independent judging process that considered more than 130 nominations. The awards recognise women contributing to positive change in South Australia.
The occasion gives readers a reason to pause over the duration of Dixon’s contribution. Four decades of work represents persistence, relationships and knowledge built over time. Public recognition can make that accumulated experience more visible, particularly to younger people considering how they might contribute to their own communities.
