Nearly 40 young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have gathered on Kaurna Country in Port Adelaide to discuss what matters to them, their families and their communities. SNAICC’s inaugural Youth Voice Gathering ran from 8–10 September.

Planned with the organisation’s Youth Voice Sub-Committee, the gathering created space for participants to share experiences and develop ideas grounded in their own knowledge. SNAICC says those insights will contribute to its priorities, advocacy and decision-making.

The 10 September report links the gathering to earlier engagement involving more than 150 individuals, including young people and 45 Aboriginal community-controlled organisations across remote, regional and urban Australia.

Those earlier conversations found a desire for authentic representation and meaningful influence over decisions. The gathering gives that work a national meeting place, with young people helping determine the issues to discuss.

Listening is most useful when there is somewhere for the ideas to go. SNAICC’s stated next step is to carry the participants’ insights into its ongoing work and conversations with decision-makers. Following that connection between a gathering and later choices will help show how youth participation develops beyond the event itself.
