Thousands of kilometres separate the communities represented in Across the Way. A new exhibition brings some of their creative work into the same South Fremantle gallery.

Visit Fremantle’s listing, published on 31 July, schedules the exhibition from 29 August to 13 September at Artitja Fine Art Gallery on South Terrace. It brings together artists from five Aboriginal-owned remote community art centres across Western Australia.
The represented regions include the Pilbara, Kimberley, Western Desert and Ngaanyatjarra Lands. The exhibition’s introduction emphasises both connections with Country and the distinct traditions and experiences expressed by the artists.
That combination invites a careful kind of looking. A shared exhibition does not mean a single style or one story of place. Each work comes from a particular practice, community and relationship with Country.
The listing identifies free entry and opening on Wednesdays through Sundays. Anyone planning a visit should check the gallery’s current arrangements and the official listing before travelling.
For people in Fremantle, it is an opportunity to spend time with work connected to places far beyond the metropolitan area, while learning which community art centres and artists are behind it.
