Environmental and cultural heritage services can create business opportunities grounded in knowledge women already carry. A North Coast pilot is pairing that foundation with practical training and enterprise support.

Announced by the NSW Government on 30 June, Currie Country Social Change’s Empowering Women for Country program will support 16 Aboriginal women. More than $148,000 has been committed to the pilot.

Training covers leadership, communication and business skills, alongside certifications in cultural heritage, drone operation, first aid and four-wheel-drive safety. Participants will also receive guidance to establish micro-businesses delivering environmental management and cultural heritage services.

The program includes ongoing mentoring, cultural connection and knowledge shared across generations. Those elements address the work of sustaining an enterprise after its initial launch, when business decisions, skills and support networks continue to matter.

This is a closer look at the earlier announcement, rather than a claim that participants have completed the program. Its ambition links economic opportunity with the protection of Country and cultural heritage.

The combination is a useful one to follow: women’s leadership can generate services, income and new opportunities while remaining connected to local responsibilities and knowledge.
