The coastline is not an endpoint for caring for Country. A newly dedicated marine expansion in South East Arnhem Land recognises responsibilities that continue into the sea.

A 14 August announcement reported a dedication ceremony at Numbulwar for the Sea Country expansion of the South East Arnhem Land Indigenous Protected Area. The addition covers 861,533 hectares of sea and 58 hectares of land.

The broader IPA, first dedicated in 2015, now spans more than 2.6 million hectares. Management involves the Northern Land Council, Numbulwar Numburindi Rangers and Yugul Mangi Land and Sea Rangers.

The announcement identifies habitat for green, hawksbill and flatback turtles, as well as large-tooth sawfish. Planned management work includes marine-debris removal, patrols, monitoring and partnerships that bring First Nations knowledge together with scientific research.

The significance lies in the continuing work behind the boundary on a map. Patrols, observations and decisions about the marine environment depend on people with relationships to these places and responsibilities for their future.

This edition follows the official dedication report; it does not imply the ceremony happened today. The report provides a detailed outline of the new area and its management.
