A hidden leak does not attract much attention until the lost water adds up. Torres Strait Island Regional Council has reported a practical project aimed at finding those losses across its communities.

In an update published on 12 August, council said a team led by Aqua Analytics identified 94 network leaks across 12 communities. Four council staff worked on the project alongside the contractor.

The team repaired as many leaks as possible during the work. Council says local water staff will address remaining network leaks, while its Building Services team will repair residential leaks.

That follow-through is a significant part of the story. Finding a fault is one stage; maintaining the service depends on the local workers who continue repairs, monitor the network and respond to reports after the visiting team has left.

Council’s update links water conservation with more reliable supplies and reduced pressure on infrastructure. It also acknowledges the contribution of staff and contractors by name, making the people behind an essential service visible.

For residents, the immediate request is straightforward: report a visible leak promptly so it can be investigated. The official council page provides the project account.
