Darwin’s waterfront is the setting for a major anniversary in First Nations creative life. The 20th Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair runs from 6 to 9 August on Larrakia Country, with an online store extending its reach.

The organiser’s published program places the opening ceremony on Thursday evening and the free public fair from Friday to Sunday at Darwin Convention Centre. Art centres from remote, regional and urban communities are represented across a wide range of practices and materials.
One detail deserves attention: DAAF Foundation takes no commission on artworks sold through the fair, with sales returning to participating art centres. That model makes the relationship between the buyer, the maker and the community organisation visible.
The public program includes talks, demonstrations, workshops and children’s activities. A daily accessibility hour before general opening is also listed, providing a quieter setting for visitors.
Twenty years is an occasion to look at the organisations behind the event as well as the objects on display. Community art centres sustain creative work throughout the year; the fair gives audiences a concentrated opportunity to meet and learn about them.
Check DAAF’s official program for session details, registration and online opening times.
