Getting a work into an exhibition can involve a journey long before an audience sees it. Freight, flights, accommodation and the cost of a booth can all shape whether an artist can take part.

CIAF’s announcement of 4 June names Jimi.K Thaiday and Vicki Newie as recipients of fully supported opportunities to present at the 2026 fair, through a partnership with the Torres Strait Regional Authority. The support covers those major logistics as well as on-site assistance.

Thaiday, a Peiudu artist from Erub, or Darnley Island, works across ghost-net weaving, ceramics and printmaking. Newie, originally from St Paul’s Community on Moa Island, makes work including jewellery, textiles and handcrafted objects. Their practices are distinct; the announcement brings them together through an opportunity to reach new audiences.

With CIAF’s July program approaching, this is a useful detail to keep in view. An art fair does not simply gather work by opening its doors. People and organisations make arrangements that allow artists and their objects to arrive.

For audiences, recognising that work changes the view of a display. The pieces are not disconnected from their makers’ home communities or the distances travelled. Follow the artists’ own accounts, read their names carefully and notice the practical partnerships that help a public encounter happen.
