Who helps design a training pathway is as interesting as the name of the qualification at the end. A new national initiative places Aboriginal organisations in that leadership role.

On 8 May 2026, the Australian Government announced that Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services Limited and Tranby Aboriginal Cooperative Ltd would operate the Indigenous Centre of Vocational Excellence as its host consortium. This edition revisits the announcement and the proposed role of the centre.

Known as ICOVE, it is intended to strengthen vocational education and skills pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The announcement says the Coalition of Peaks and member organisations helped design a structure that includes innovation, capacity building, research and data, alongside policy work.

The news does not itself announce a course readers can immediately enrol in. Its significance is institutional: two Aboriginal organisations working together to influence how training is developed and supported.

For people interested in education, it is useful to distinguish that system-building work from the next intake of a particular program. Both deserve attention, but they answer different questions. A course listing explains where a learner might begin; a centre like this concerns the knowledge, relationships and evidence shaping the pathway. Follow the named organisations for their own updates as that work develops.
